Shane Koyczan

About
Shane Koyzcan is a Canadian spoken-word artist who was born in Yellowknife, NT, and he grew up in Penticton, BC. Shane focuses on social justice, mental health, and love. His debut collection, Visiting Hours (2005), was deemed one the the Best Books of 2005 by the Guardian and Globe and Mail. In 2008, he published his autobiographical novel in verse, Stickboy. This novel is also being adapted for the stage by the Vancouver Opera. Shane is also the author of Our Deathbeds Will Be Thirsty (2012) and A Bruise on Light (2014), both poetry collections. He is also a member of the "talk rock" band Short Story Long, and is a part of the spoken-word group Tons of Fun University.

Shane is the winner of both the National Poetry Slam and the Canadian Spoken Word Olympics, where he performed "We Are More" at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. He is best known for his animated video and book "To This Day" on YouTube and his feature on Ted Talk about bullying. For his social justice work, he has received a BC Civil Liberties Award for the Arts.
